74LS162 DIP Synchronous 4-Bit Decade Counter
The 74LS162 is a high speed TTL integrated circuit designed for synchronous decade counting. This device is internally pre-programmed to count in a Binary Coded Decimal sequence from 0000 to 1001. A key feature of this specific model is the synchronous clear input, which ensures that the reset to zero happens only at the next positive clock transition. This prevents the asynchronous glitches often found in simpler counting circuits.
The IC is fully presettable, allowing any 4-bit BCD value to be loaded via the parallel data inputs when the load line is held low. Because all flip flops are clocked simultaneously, the outputs change state at the exact same time. This makes the 74LS162 ideal for high speed timing and frequency division applications where precision is critical. Two enable inputs and a ripple carry output are provided to facilitate easy cascading for multi-stage counting systems.
