74LS184 DIP BCD-to-Binary Converter
The 74LS184 is a high speed TTL integrated circuit specifically designed to perform BCD-to-Binary code conversion. It is a masked-program Read-Only Memory (ROM) configured to provide the necessary logic for translating Binary Coded Decimal (BCD) signals into their pure binary equivalents. This device is an essential tool for digital systems that interface with human-readable inputs, such as thumbwheel switches or numeric keypads, which then need to be processed by binary-based arithmetic units.
The IC can be used to convert two-decade BCD numbers (0-79) into 6-bit binary code in a single stage. For larger numbers, multiple 74LS184 units can be cascaded in a modular array to convert any number of BCD decades into a full binary word. Its specialized internal architecture provides a much faster and more compact solution than using a combination of standard logic gates or multiplexers for the same conversion task.
